ALOE VERA

Botanical Name : Aloe barbadensis
Ayurvedic : Ghratkumari
English Name : Aloe, Barbados Aloe, Indian Aloe
Indian Name :  Hindi-Gheekanwar,  Marathi-Korfad

What is it?
Aloe Vera is mostly heard as a constituent in the cosmetics. It is also used in some healthy foods. The name "aloe" comes from the Arabic alloeh which means "bitter and shiny substance." Throughout history, this plant has been important. It is called the "plant of immortality" because it has been found in the wall carvings of ancient Egyptian temples. It has also been found in many graves in Mecca. It symbolized the patience needed during the time between burial and resurrection.

Medicinal Uses: 
Aloe Vera has several medicinal purposes. The medicinal values of Aloe Vera lies in the viscous gel-like pulp obtained on peeling the leaves and its powdered form. Aloe Vera has cooling properties,is bitter in taste,is anabolic in its action and is a fighter of "Pitta". These properties enables it to guard against fever, skin diseases, bums, ulcers, excessive thirst and convulsions.  Its leaves can be split to get out the juice to rub on the skin to treat sunburns, wounds, insect bites, wrinkles, scratches, and skin irritations. A tea made from its dried juice serves to be a good wash to wounds and the eyes. According to a study in Europe, it can also reduce the blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Furthermore, it has shown signs that it's capable of treating leukemia in laboratory tests. It also treats asthma, stomach ache, fever, and headache.
